Heron Farms Restoration PRojects

Heron Farms restores one square foot of marshland for every pound of food sold. Below are examples of various restorations projects we are involved with. If you’d like to volunteer at one of our projects, please fill out a volunteer form and our restoration coordinator will be in touch with you!

Harbor Dredging & Saltmarsh Displacement

Confined disposal of dredged material from the Charleston Harbor and surrounding waterways has displaced over 3,000 acres of tidal saltmarsh. Charleston is one of many ports with this displacement problem. Yet restoring these areas with marsh plants using the traditional greenhouse-to-transplant approach has proved too costly and cumbersome for the razor thin margins of the dredging industry. To combat these costs and bring back the marshes to their former glory, Heron Farms has developed an unmanned aerial vehicle capable of delivering a seed payload at a fraction of the cost.

Seawater Intrusion & Crop Destruction

Millions of acres of coastal rice paddies in Bangladesh and surrounding Asian countries are degraded each year due to rising sea levels. Seawater inundation causes decreased yields for farmers and in some cases the abandonment of once productive farms. In many cases these rice paddies are located in the sites of former saltmarshes. In February 2020 our founder traveled to Bangladesh to join the Bangladeshi Ministry of Agriculture and the Dutch ICCO Cooperation in an attempt to turn the abandoned salty rice paddies into edible salt marshes. By April 2020 the partner farmers at each pilot site were harvesting edible salt-tolerant plants and selling them at village markets around the coast.
